Over the last 20 years across the western world the increasing toll of sedentary behaviour on young peoples physical and mental wellbeing is a well-documented phenomenon. Many different piecemeal policy initiatives have failed to tackle the problem. In this podcast Steve Aspinall (BASRAT) speaks to head teacher Elaine Wyllie about the daily mile initiative. This simple game changing initiative provides massive public health benefits though a simple philosophy of non-competitive outdoor fun that is accessible to all children regardless of age, gender, ability or socioeconomic background.

Mayo Sports stars launch primary schools‘ Daily Mile initiative

Primary schools across Mayo are to participate in a new daily initiative, The Daily Mile, which will improve the physical, emotional, and social health and wellbeing of all children and help in the battle to combat obesity. Mayo GAA stars Lee Keegan and Cora Staunton joined children and staff in Snugboro National School Castlebar last week to launch this programme which has its origins in the UK.

Calls for Daily Mile to be rolled out to every school

Calls are being made for more primaries in Glasgow to adopt a sports initiative that has “transformed” the health of youngsters in a Scottish school.

Sports leaders and public health officials in Glasgow would like to see more pressure exerted on primary schools to introduce the Daily Mile, where youngsters walk or run a mile every day.

The 15-minute initiative was pioneered at St Ninians Primary in Stirling in March 2012 and despite rising obesity rates across the UK, the school says no pupils are overweight and have described the effects as “transformative.”
